Twenty thousand acres, thirty-four miles

Lake Gaston is a 20,300-acre impoundment of the Roanoke River running thirty-four miles along the North Carolina–Virginia line, with roughly 350 miles of shoreline and 450,000 acre-feet of storage.

The pool barely moves

Unlike most reservoirs in the Southeast, Lake Gaston is held between 199 and 200 feet nearly all year, with a little extra storage toward weekends in spawning season. Your dock stays usable from April to October — no long walk down a mud bank in August.

Gaston Dam

An earth and concrete dam 3,600 feet long and 105 feet tall, with eleven radial crest gates and four generators making 220 megawatts. It went into service in 1963 — the year the lake was born.

Free ramps ring the lake in both states, run by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and Virginia DWR — Summit and Salmon Landing and Hawtree Creek and Henrico on the Carolina side, Pea Hill Creek and Steel Bridge and Poplar Creek on the Virginia.

Why every dock looks the same

Dominion Energy manages the shoreline under its federal licence, and every pier, boathouse, riprap job or dredging project needs an approved agreement — one dock per lot, 1,250 square feet maximum, no higher than sixteen feet, never more than a quarter of the way across a cove.

Approvals take about 45 days and do not transfer automatically when a property sells · nothing may be attached to or built on the dock

Dominion and the Wildlife Commission’s creel survey clocked 217,964 angler-hours on this lake, and black bass took fifty-four per cent of all of it. Catch rates sit in the upper part of the normal range for a Piedmont reservoir; fish reach fourteen inches by age three.

Four state record catfish

Lake Gaston produced four successive North Carolina record blue catfish — 91 and 105 pounds in December 2015, 117.5 in June 2016, and 121.9 in July 2020. The current state record, 127 pounds, came out of the Roanoke just downstream.

Crappie and white perch

Black crappie is the most harvested fish in the lake — over eighteen thousand kept in a single survey year — with white perch close behind. This is the family fishing, and it is genuinely good off a dock.

A real reciprocal agreement covers this lake: a valid fishing licence from either North Carolina or Virginia is honoured on Kerr Reservoir, Lake Gaston and their boat-accessible tributaries. You follow the rules of whichever state’s water you are actually sitting in.

The Rockfish Run

Twenty-five minutes away, the striped bass come up the river to spawn.

Weldon calls itself the Rockfish Capital of the World

Every spring, striped bass of the Albemarle–Roanoke stock run up the Roanoke from the sound to spawn on the rapids at Weldon — as far upstream as they can get below the dam. The Wildlife Commission has surveyed the spawning stock here every spring since 1991.

The Wildlife Commission closed hook-and-line striped bass harvest on the Roanoke for the 2026 run — catch and release only, every fish returned immediately. Eight years of poor spawning success drove the decision.

The public swimming beach

Dominion runs a free day-use area on the lake with a sand beach and roped swimming area, changing rooms, picnic tables, horseshoe pits, a fishing pier and a ramp.

Before anyone drives the boat

North Carolina requires a NASBLA-approved boating course for anyone born on or after 1 January 1988 operating ten horsepower or more — carry the card aboard. No one under sixteen may drive a jet ski, and no jet skis at all between sunset and sunrise.
